Timers are silent on iPhone

Updated 18 October 2026

A PelQi timer rings with sound on every open PelQi screen at home and sends a notification to your phones. On iPhone a few settings can make it silent. Here is how to make sure you hear it.

The surest way to hear a timer

  • Keep a PelQi screen open. An open PelQi screen (the app, the Home Screen icon, a browser tab, or a kitchen screen) rings on time with sound. Tap the screen once after opening it: browsers only play sound after a first tap.
  • A notification to a closed browser can arrive late. That is down to the browser and its notification service, not PelQi.

Settings that silence it on iPhone

  • Silent mode. With the ring/silent switch (or Action button) on silent, iPhone can mute the ringing on screen and notification sounds. Turn silent mode off while you rely on a timer.
  • Focus and Do Not Disturb. A Focus holds back PelQi's notifications unless PelQi is allowed in that Focus (Settings, Focus, your Focus, Apps).
  • Notification sounds. In Settings, Notifications, PelQi, make sure Sounds is on.
  • Notifications are not on for this iPhone. See Notifications are not arriving.

What is coming

Today the iPhone app shows timers as an ordinary notification with the default sound. A coming update to the iPhone app marks them as time-sensitive, so they can break through Focus. PelQi does not use Apple's critical alerts, so a timer never plays through silent mode by itself.

What you should see

When the timer ends, the open PelQi screen shows a ringing card with Stop and Snooze and plays a tone, and your phone shows a notice with the timer's name. Stop it on any screen and the others go quiet.
